The lesson will propose a historical overview of the cultural context in which Italian speech studies began. The new configuration of the relationship between written and spoken language will also be investigated, regarding both "literary society" and the whole of linguistic studies. Topics will include: the birth of the debate on the presumed decadence of the Italian language, the strand of studies on speech rendering in written texts, the diffusion of functional writing textbooks.
