The aim of the conference is to compare the ongoing research and historiographical perspectives on political communication between government and the governed in the Mediterranean area in the first half of the 19th century.
Petitions represent a privileged point of view to reconstruct the power relations, the mechanisms of political negotiation and mediation, the conceptions of sovereignty and the different aspects of social conflicts that have defined historical processes of different places and times. The use of petitions as a historical source lets us to formulate innovative interpretative proposals on revolution and counter-revolution, exile and political participation, ideas of citizenship and construction of the public sphere in the Mediterranean world of the first decades of the 19th century, where political ideas were discussed and new social practices imagined. The aim of this conference is to compare current studies and test the different developing researches on the subject, to draw an initial balance and propose new developments and initiatives.
