Abstract The seminar will focus on the emperor Julian’s image, from the reception of his works in Renaissance Humanism (Boccaccio) to the celebratory reconstructions elaborated by Enlightenment philosophers and historians like Voltaire. Finally, the chapters of Gibbon’s History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire dedicated to Julian will be examined, highlighting the originality of this interpretation, and trying to understand to what extent it can still be useful to modern scholars.
